Anime Club

Culture + Media

Anime Club provides students with an opportunity to explore Japanese animation and related popular culture while connecting with classmates who share similar interests.

Art Club

Visual Arts

The Art Club gives students opportunities to explore various types of visual art and create original designs using paper mache, glass, clay and other materials.

Participation details

Art Club meets after school throughout the school year. Any interested student is eligible to participate. Students should listen to announcements for sign-up information.

Band

Instrumental Music

Students regularly participating in the Instrumental Lesson Program have the opportunity to broaden and further their instrumental education through band.

Band levels & performances

Students are placed in the band best suited for their level of playing ability, regardless of their current grade.

1st Level Band Half-year activity primarily for students, regardless of grade, who have just started learning how to play one of the band instruments.
2nd Level Band Full-year activity typically, but not limited to, students who are in their second year of instrumental lessons. Members may also have large-group instrumental performance experience.
3rd Level Band Full-year activity typically, but not limited to, students in their third or fourth year of instrumental lessons. Members have large-group instrumental performance experience.
Performances WMS bands perform in concerts for the school and community. Experienced bands also attend performance-based field trips throughout the school year.

Chorus

Vocal Music

Students develop vocal performance skills while preparing for school concerts and other performance opportunities.

Grade-level information

5th Grade Chorus: Open to all fifth graders. Interested students must complete an application distributed during the first music class of the school year. Rehearsals are held once a week after school, and students perform in concerts.

Grades 6–8: Any sixth-, seventh- or eighth-grade student may sign up. Rehearsals are once a week after school on Tuesdays. Students participate in a Winter Concert, Spring Concert and the annual High Note Festival.

Interested students in grades 6–8 should see Mrs. Gerelli during homeroom in room E104.

Drama Club

Theatre

WMS presents one Musical Theater production each spring. Any interested student may audition for a part in the play.

Auditions, rehearsals & performances

Auditions are held during the first week in January. Students should listen to morning announcements to learn when and where auditions will be held.

Weekly Rehearsals Three after-school rehearsals are scheduled weekly until 5:00 PM. There are also some Saturday rehearsals.
Production Week The final week of rehearsal and performances is more time intensive, with students needed from 3:00 PM until 9:00 PM.
Performances Four performances are held: Wednesday for district fourth-grade classes, followed by Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening performances.
Evening of Monologues Available to eighth-grade Drama Club students. Students meet for one rehearsal a week for four weeks and perform two two-minute monologues, one comedic and one dramatic. Students positively assess and critique each other's work during the rehearsal process.

Percussion Ensemble

Instrumental Music

Existing WMS percussion students may be invited to perform in this select group, which explores various types of percussion music and different methods of creating percussive sounds.

Students meet after school weekly. Percussion Ensemble members have opportunities to participate in school concerts and may also attend field trips.

Stage Crew

Behind the Scenes

Stage Crew is a small group of students in grades 6–8 who are interested in behind-the-scenes theater.

Eligibility & sign-ups

An announcement is made in the fall with sign-up information. Interested students are evaluated by the advisor. Stage Crew members must maintain a “B” average in all academic and related arts subjects.

Leadership, Service & Community Lead, serve and help strengthen the WMS community 5 opportunities

B.R.A.V.E.S. Club

Leadership + Environment

B.R.A.V.E.S. is a teacher, parent and student advisory and leadership club focused on environmental and community projects.

Advisors: Tricia Davis / Nicole Carusone / Michelle Carnevale
Projects & participation

Projects include Student Exchange with NJ Clean Communities, environmental research and community clean-ups.

Approximately 18 students are selected from grades 6–8. There is approximately one meeting per month; however, students also work on projects with their advisors during lunch and after school as needed.

Builder's Club

Community Service

Builder's Club is a community service organization that supports members of the school and local community.

Advisors: Stephanie Cowie / Haley Baner
Projects & participation

Activities include sock and glove collections, making cards for sick children or elderly residents, coordinating Thanksgiving food baskets for families in the school population, and serving as Santa's Helpers for elementary school classes.

Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students are welcome. Meetings are one hour after school and continue throughout the school year.

Multicultural Club

Culture + Community

The Multicultural Club increases student awareness of other cultures and helps students understand the richness and diversity of other ways of life.

Advisor: Arthur Conley
Activities & participation

Students learn about cultures through guest speakers, community service projects and field trips. Students are also responsible for displays and announcements associated with the club.

Any WMS student may participate.

S.A.V.E. Club

Environment + Service

S.A.V.E. — Students Against Violating the Environment — combines service and academic work focused on environmental issues in the community.

Advisor: Bria Nestore
Partners & activities

Students meet after school once a week to study environmental issues, work on solutions and learn about environmental careers.

Community partners include Monroe Township Clean Communities, South Jersey Land and Water Trust, NJ Field Office of US Fish and Wildlife Service, and Monroe Municipal Utility Authority. Guest speakers may also participate throughout the school year.

Student Council

Student Leadership

Student Council empowers students to develop leadership skills while serving as the voice of the student body and helping strengthen the school community.

Advisor: Valencia Nichols
Roles & participation

Members lead by example by managing the school store, proposing student-focused initiatives, planning activities, and working collaboratively with school staff to bring positive ideas to life.

Student Council members also help organize and support school and community-oriented events throughout the year.

Student Council is open to students in grades 5–8. Students interested in serving as a Homeroom Representative must complete an application, and one representative is selected from each homeroom.

Student Council is a year-round activity with meetings held once a month. Regular attendance and active participation are expected, and attendance is closely monitored.

Computer Club

Technology

Computer Club offers students opportunities to explore technology while expanding their computer knowledge and skills in a collaborative environment.

Math Counts

Mathematics

Math Counts provides students interested in mathematics with opportunities to strengthen problem-solving skills through challenging mathematical activities and competitions.

Newspaper Club

Writing + Journalism

Newspaper Club is open to students in all grades who enjoy writing and want to contribute to publications for the WMS student body.

Meetings & sign-ups

Potential newspaper members should be creative writers who are self-initiated. Four issues are printed and distributed to the entire student body each year.

Beginning in September, meetings are held three times a month for one hour after school. Students should listen for announcements about permission slips and sign-up information.

TV Studio

Broadcast Media

TV Studio allows students to participate in producing school broadcasts while developing communication, technology and media production skills.

Yearbook

Publishing

Yearbook is a year-long activity that produces WMS's annual yearbook and is open to students in grades 7 and 8.

The activity continues throughout the school year and produces a final yearbook of more than 100 pages. Students should listen for a sign-up announcement in September.

Student Recognition

Renaissance is a national student recognition program celebrating excellence in academics, attendance, character, citizenship and school involvement.

Strength Training Club

Fitness

Strength Training & Physical Conditioning provides opportunities for students to develop strength, fitness, confidence and healthy exercise habits.

What sessions include

Sessions combine resistance training, bodyweight exercises and circuit training to create balanced, age-appropriate workouts.

Volleyball (Intramural)

Recreation

Students have opportunities to participate in four Intramural Volleyball seasons during the school year.

Each season consists of approximately 10–12 individual sessions over two months. Sessions last between 90 and 120 minutes.

Season 1 · September–October Held at Williamstown High School in the gymnasium at the conclusion of WHS Girls' Volleyball home matches. Sessions run 5:30–7:30 and are open to interested seventh- and eighth-grade students.
Season 2 · January–February Held in either the WMS 5/6 gymnasium or 7/8 gymnasium at the same time as WMS interscholastic basketball. Open to grades 6–8. Sessions run 2:50–4:25.
Season 3 · March–April Open to all WMS students. Sessions are held in the 7/8 gymnasium from 2:50–4:25.
Season 4 · May–June Open to all WMS students regardless of grade. Sessions are held after school in the 5/6 gymnasium from 2:50–4:25.

National Junior Honor Society

NJHS Eligibility & Participation

NJHS recognizes students who consistently demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, citizenship, character, service and meaningful involvement in the WMS community.

Grades 7–8 Students may apply beginning in seventh grade.
93%+ Required academic average for eligibility.

Academic Eligibility

National Junior Honor Society is for seventh- and eighth-grade students only. Students in fifth and sixth grade are not eligible to apply until seventh grade.

Students become eligible based on attaining a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 93% or higher at the end of sixth grade, and after the second marking period in seventh grade, and maintaining that average for the remainder of the school year.

Eligible students are notified by letter in February of their seventh- or eighth-grade year and then receive applications to apply.

Students must actively and consistently demonstrate all five principles and be able to provide evidence when they submit their applications.

Continued Eligibility

Students who are not selected in seventh grade and meet the criteria in eighth grade may apply for admission in grade 8.

Students inducted in seventh grade are consistently reevaluated for continuation in the program in grade 8.

WMS Participation Requirement

Students who are considered for NJHS must participate in at least one Tier I activity or two Tier II activities.

Students must be involved in school-based clubs, school-based sports and/or school-based activities during the school year. Club, sport and activity participation and attendance are evaluated during the application process.

Only WMS sports, clubs and activities are accepted toward this requirement.

Renaissance: Renaissance is a recognition program, not an activity, club or sport, and does not count toward this requirement. Students may note their Renaissance participation in the scholarship section of their application essay.

Williamstown Middle School offers competitive athletic programs that promote teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership and physical fitness.
