A Walk Through Williamstown’s History

The next drive through Williamstown may come with a few stories from the back seat.

Fourth graders from all four MTPS elementary schools are exploring local history on foot this fall. Today was Holly Glen’s turn, and these photos share a little of their morning.

Classes split into smaller groups and rotated among the Ireland Hoffer House & Gardens, Hall Street School and the historic Reading Room. Buildings they may have passed on the way somewhere else became places to stop, look around and get to know.

Williamstown Historical Society volunteers guided students through the Hoffer House, where there was plenty to ask about. World War I and World War II helmets, an early spinning wheel and household items offered a close look at life years ago. In another room, they learned how medicine and patient care have changed over time.

Outside, the garden gave students a chance to learn about plant life cycles and how people grew plants for food, spices and medicine. At the Reading Room, they stepped inside Williamstown’s first library and heard about the people it served.

Watching their curiosity was one of the best parts of the visit. Students paused for a closer look and asked questions, while volunteers gladly shared what they knew. It was a pleasure to see people who have spent time preserving our town’s history introduce it to children growing up here today.

With so much to see, students were encouraged to share what they learned at home and return with their families to explore the entire house. Families can arrange a time to visit or stop by for an open house tour during the town’s Christmas tree lighting!

Thank you to the Williamstown Historical Society volunteers for welcoming our students and inviting them to bring their families back. We’re also grateful to the teachers, staff, administrators and community members making these trips possible across all four elementary schools.
